BJJ exploded in popularity in the early 90’s after its effectiveness was proven in the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). The legendary Gracie family of Brazil had developed the art from traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo. It is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling/ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using joint locks and chokeholds. BJJ can be trained for self defense, fitness, sport grappling, and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Classes are available for children and adults.
Jamey Perkins & Shawn Lawrence teach the SMAC BJJ classes.
